So I Took the New Haval H7 Off-Road… And Here’s the Truth 👀
Alright fam, this ain’t your typical “I drove it around the block and sipped a latte” car review. I took the brand new Haval H7 out where it actually counts – off-road, in the dirt, in the mud, through water and up rocky hills to see if this 4WD SUV is all talk or the real deal.

Two weekends ago, I hit up Killarney 4x4 Adventure Trails in Shongweni and trust me, this place is the ultimate test for any off-road vehicle. I’m talking full slip-and-slide madness. Sand tracks. Stone climbs. Water crossings. And yes, those steep hills that have you second-guessing your life choices halfway up.
And before I continue huge shout out to the owner of Killarney, Mr. Steven Botha. For my first ever off-road experience, he legit gave us a day I’ll never forget. The setup, the energy, the course – all fire. Highly recommend if you're in KZN and want to put your wheels to the test.

So How Did It Handle the Off-Road Madness?
Let me put it like this — I left it in Drive mode the entire day. Didn’t even touch the off-road modes. And guess what?
It. Handled. Everything.
- Mud? Handled.
- Sand and loose gravel? No drama.
- Deep water? Smooth sailing.
- Steep rocky climbs? This thing was climbing like a goat with grippy boots.
It honestly blew me away. I was fully expecting to have to flip it into mud mode or lock the diff at some point, but nah, Drive mode alone got it done.
That’s a big testament to the engineering from Haval here. You’ve got a 4WD system that’s actually functional, not just there to sell badges.
What I Didn’t Love
Now, no car is perfect — and here’s where the H7 loses a few points:
❌ No recovery points. If you do get stuck somewhere serious, there’s no easy place to hook up a tow rope. For a car this capable off-road, that’s kind of a miss.
❌ Fuel use will spike under hard off-road conditions (which is kinda expected).
❌ Not for extreme 4x4 purists; this isn’t a Land Cruiser, and it’s not pretending to be. But for 90% of what the average adventurer does? More than enough.

Score: 7.5 / 10
If it had recovery points and a few extra hardcore 4x4 tweaks, it’d be an 8.5 easy. But even as it stands — this SUV is an absolute beast.
